A Berean Heart
A Berean Heart
The difference between a genuine seeker of truth and someone protecting an illusion comes down to the grueling work of excavation.
Like the Bereans, a person serious about truth welcomes a challenge because they are not trying to defend their pride; they want to make sure their feet are on solid ground. When their current position is challenged, they dig down deep into the scriptures to verify reality.
Jesus laid out the exact formula for this kind of unshakeable life. It is not enough to just show up or use the right vocabulary. He outlined three distinct steps:
* Whoever comes to Me,
* Hears My sayings,
* And does them.
He compares this person to a builder who dug down deep until they hit bedrock. When the storm hits, that house stands because it is anchored in reality.
On the flip side is the person who wants the comfort of the house without the labor of digging the foundation. They hear the words, but they refuse to do them because they lack the real faith to attend to obedience. They might claim they believe, but true belief is tied directly to what a person does. When their lifestyle or beliefs are confronted, they do not dig deeper to repent or adjust. Instead, they try to glue the sand down with defensive arguments, shifting definitions, and a suppression of the truth just to maintain their own comfort.
You cannot mock God or play games with the foundation. The sand always gives way in the storm. True security is found in a faith that both believes Him and actually does what He says.
