An Open Letter on Responding to the Sacred Name Movement with Love and Truth
I recently had a conversation with an honest and genuine believer named Winnie who had fallen into the "Sacred Name" movement. Below is the response I shared with her. I wanted to post this publicly as an open letter and an example of how we can confront this specific heresy with absolute biblical truth, intellectual honesty, and Christlike love.
Winnie, I truly appreciate how honest, genuine, and kind you are in your approach. You can see how much you love the Father! However, I completely disagree with your statement about what "you and I both know."
I absolutely recognize that scripture, psychology, and human systems have been manipulated throughout history to lead people astray and control others. For example, the King James translation intentionally left out the study commentaries found in the Geneva Bible because King James did not want people reading direct discussions on how to biblically enact justice and run a government. That is exactly why the original settlers of the United States brought the Geneva Bible with them, and our founding fathers used those biblical principles to lay the groundwork for this nation. We also see people holding tightly to the "King James Only" movement or other versions.
But where we differ is that I hold tightly to the Person and work of Jesus Christ, the real Son of God who came in the flesh, who has many names, and who carries a name that nobody else knows.
I want to be direct with you because from what I can tell, I am talking to a person of peace. That means you are worth my time and attention to help you unravel the deception you are currently walking in. The sacred name movement is simply another one of those many historical deceptions. It uses a little bit of truth and twists it for a particular agenda. I know you mean well and are sold out to it, but you are simply deceived.
There are two major problems with this doctrine that need to be addressed:
First, the core argument surrounding the name of God is wrong and historically inaccurate. In ancient Hebrew, there were no vowels. The Tetragrammaton sounded like breathing in and out. In absolute honor of God, the Hebrews avoided saying it altogether and instead used titles like "The Lord," which simply means Master, or "I AM." "I AM" is a prefix for His many names, used as a trigger for us to remember all the various aspects of His character that Scripture reveals. God relates to us for our own sake. His attention and capacity are inexhaustible, but our human capacity and attention are highly limited. By forcing people to focus on linguistic formulas, you are hijacking the limited attention of human beings to focus on something that is not true and, evidently from Scripture, not important to God.
God is spirit, and His Son came in the flesh. The sacred name heresy is internally inconsistent, especially since the New Testament was written in Greek and carries a translated form of the Savior's name. One of God's most beautiful qualities is that while He is sovereign and demands respect, Jesus is also incredibly humble, gracious, and not at all nitpicking as men tend to be with their doctrines. It is not dishonoring to God to recognize His humility and walk in it.
To use your analogy about your name, the beautiful truth about our Heavenly Father is that He isn’t just a person down the hall who might mishear us. He is the sovereign Creator who looks directly at the human heart (1 Samuel 16:7). He doesn’t just hear the phonetic sound coming out of our mouths; He hears the spirit and the soul crying out to Him.
When the Apostle Paul wrote under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit that "everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved" (Romans 10:13), he didn't write it in Hebrew. The Holy Spirit chose to preserve the New Testament scriptures in Greek, deliberately translating the Hebrew names into "Kyrios" (Lord) and "Iesous" (Jesus). If the exact Hebrew pronunciation were a strict requirement for salvation or power, the Holy Spirit would not have translated His name into Greek for the rest of the world to use. God intentionally chose a universal language because the power isn't in a linguistic formula or specific letters, it is in the actual Person of the Savior.
Second, you are grabbing attention away from the love, truth, simplicity, and accessibility of the Gospel. If you want to know what is actually important to God, look at how Jesus responded when asked for the greatest commandment. He said to love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength, and to love your neighbor as yourself. He said all the law and the prophets hang on these two things.
Instead, this movement nitpicks over an interpretation of history and language that comes from human imagination. I genuinely believe it goes even deeper than that. The demonic often works subtly through distractions rather than outright opposites. The enemy loves to get people wrapped up in legalistic ideas so they stop focusing on the actual truth of the Gospel, the beautiful character of God, and the accessibility of His grace.
While men have absolutely tried to manipulate things throughout history for power, we have the absolute assurance that God has perfectly preserved His Word (Psalm 12:6-7). The Gospel is beautifully simple so that anyone, in any language, can call on Jesus and be fully saved.
I encourage you to look past these distractions, Winnie. I love your heart for prayer, and I am praying that the Holy Spirit opens your eyes to the deep freedom and simplicity found in Jesus. Blessings to you! 🙏🏿💕
