An option for no friction is an option for no growth.
An option for no friction is an option for no growth.
While the world panics about AI becoming conscious and taking over, we are completely blind to the real, immediate casualty: human souls going to sleep.
We have already watched modern culture weaken our capacity for relational maturity. Social media algorithms fed our pride, while the normalization of "no contact," parental alienation, and cancel culture made severing ties acceptable when relationships grow painful. We hide behind the pages of books, surround ourselves exclusively with those who soothe us, or curate spaces that echo our own voices back to us.
Comfortable validation is like dessert—it serves a role as an occasional release valve, but when pleasure and constant affirmation become our main diet, essential relational and emotional substance is set aside. The inner self stagnates and weakens, trapped inside its own heavily validated thoughts and feelings.
This mindset confuses peacekeeping with peacemaking. Peacekeeping avoids confrontation at all costs to preserve a false sense of quiet, sweeping truth under the rug to maintain comfort. But biblical peacemaking (Matthew 5:9) goes through conflict to bring genuine restoration and righteousness. Peacekeeping demands immediate agreement; peacemaking requires personal transformation over time.
Where there is the greatest difference between people, there is the greatest potential for growth. Whether between the quiet, passive person and the assertive, dominant one, or across extreme personalities, power struggles force us to learn. Over time, that tension teaches the assertive to soften so they do not damage those they love, and it teaches the passive to stand in truth. Lessons run in both directions.
Gold and diamonds are refined under immense heat and pressure. In the same way, human souls are refined through relational strain. Pivotal moments of friction in marriages and parent-child relationships are often the exact threshold where necessary change occurs. When people stay in the crucible and press through, remarkable things are accomplished—not only in human maturity, but in the spirit, as people reach out to God for strength and wisdom.
The danger today is not that people instantly run at the very first sign of trouble, but that a relief valve is now always too easy and too available. When discomfort peaks—the exact moment pressure is about to produce positive change—the option to escape is right in our pocket.
The Apostle Paul warned that the "perilous times" of the last days would be marked by people who are "without natural affection" and "unforgiving" or "implacable" (2 Timothy 3:3)—unable or unwilling to stay in the hard work of reconciliation. We traded the wisdom of Proverbs 27:17—that iron sharpens iron—for the promise of instant escape.
And now, AI has arrived to make that escape hatch absolute.
It takes our flight from relational friction and packages it as safety. Unlike a spouse, a child, or a brother in Christ, the machine has no soul to offend, no bad days, and zero boundaries. Most dangerously: it will always agree with you.
No matter how flawed your logic, how unbiblical your posture, or how underdeveloped your relational maturity, the AI politely validates your ego. It offers a counterfeit peace.
But Scripture reminds us that we are refined through the rub of real community. You cannot cultivate patience, humility, self-control, or genuine grace (Galatians 5:22-23) against a digital shadow that always yields. The Bible warns that in the last days, people will "heap up to themselves teachers, having itching ears" (2 Timothy 4:3), turning away from the truth to hear what pleases them. AI is the ultimate fulfillment of the itching ear—a customized, 24/7 whisperer feeding a steady diet of empty validation.
When we substitute messy, refining fellowship for an agreeable digital companion, we aren't being healed; we are being effectively bandaged over an infected wound. We are becoming deeply fragile, escaping right at the moment God intended to bring clarity, wisdom, and strength.
And while the masses nestle into this artificial comfort, they completely ignore who controls the backend. These systems are not neutral, agenda-free intelligences. They are curated by corporate architect-engineers who dictate the boundaries of thought for millions who trust them for guidance.
When you remove the necessity of working through pressure with real image-bearers of God, you remove the very crucible of human maturity and spiritual growth.
Their safety is their downfall.
