He stayed away because coming home meant being known.

In that world, distance wasn’t measured in miles. It was measured in shame. You didn’t manage relationships from afar. You either returned and faced the truth, or you stayed gone.

The son didn’t fear authority itself.
He feared what truth would expose.
He feared accountability because of what it would require of him.

So he chose distance, believing it would give him freedom.

But isolation was never freedom.
It was fear trying to feel like safety.

A heart that is truly free does not need to isolate.
It moves toward reconciliation out of goodwill, not coercion.

That was the heart of the father.

He could have been bitter.
He could have been punitive.
Instead, he waited.

And when the son finally turned back, the father ran.

Jesus told this in the parable of the prodigal son.

Freedom doesn’t run from relationship.
It restores it.
And love, when it is truly free, always moves first.
