I keep seeing posts, directly and indirectly, criticizing large churches. Statements like “a pastor’s goal should not be a large church” sound spiritual on the surface, but they miss something fundamental.
Every number is a person. Every number represents a soul made in the image of God. God is not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance. Numbers are not the enemy. They never were.
Scripture does not treat growth as something embarrassing or carnal. In Acts, numbers are repeatedly recorded and celebrated because they represent people coming to Christ.
“Then those who gladly received his word were baptized and that day about three thousand souls were added to them.” (Acts 2:41, NKJV)
“And the Lord added to the church daily those who were being saved.” (Acts 2:47, NKJV)
“Then the word of God spread and the number of the disciples multiplied greatly.” (Acts 6:7, NKJV)
Multiplying genuine disciples is not a marketing goal. It is the Great Commission.
“Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations.” (Matthew 28:19, NKJV)
The problem is not numbers. The problem is how we get there.
If the gospel is preached accurately, with proper emphasis, and in the power of the Holy Spirit, growth will happen. That is not manipulation. That is God giving the increase.
“My speech and my preaching were not with persuasive words of human wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power.” (1 Corinthians 2:4, NKJV)
“So then neither he who plants is anything, nor he who waters, but God who gives the increase.” (1 Corinthians 3:7, NKJV)
Yes, there are illegitimate ways to gather crowds, and Scripture warns us about false teaching and shallow faith. But Scripture never warns us against growth itself.
Jesus said plainly that few find the narrow way.
“Because narrow is the gate and difficult is the way which leads to life, and there are few who find it.” (Matthew 7:14, NKJV)
But that does not mean we aim for small. Our goal should be to make that “few” as many as possible, with every disciple genuine. We also know that wheat and chaff exist together until the end.
“Let both grow together until the harvest.” (Matthew 13:30, NKJV)
Criticizing churches simply because they are large is not discernment. Scripture tells us what to evaluate.
“For no other foundation can anyone lay than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ.”
“Each one’s work will become clear.” (1 Corinthians 3:11–13, NKJV)
Jesus Himself gathered massive crowds. Then truth tested hearts, and many walked away.
“From that time many of His disciples went back and walked with Him no more.” (John 6:66, NKJV)
The issue was never numbers. It was always the heart.
Here is the promise that settles the matter.
“And I, if I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all peoples to Myself.” (John 12:32, NKJV)
When Christ is lifted up by the Spirit through faithful preaching, people come. When people come, numbers grow. And that is something to thank God for, not apologize for.
We should spend less time envying or criticizing others and more time lifting Jesus up.
May God grant that billions of souls are won in this generation. Scripture says few find the path, but our goal should still be every soul, because that is God’s heart.
