If you look at modern culture through Ephesians 6:12—wrestling not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, powers, and rulers of darkness—what looks like a simple social trend on the surface is revealed as a calculated attack on the family, covenant, and legitimate authority.
God explicitly commands leaders to rule their households well: "One that ruleth well his own house, having his children in subjection with all gravity; (For if a man know not how to rule his own house, how shall he take care of the church of God?)" (1 Timothy 3:4–5, KJV)
Scripture goes even further, showing that active oversight, instruction, and discipline are not "toxic control," but acts of love designed to rescue souls: "Do not withhold correction from a child... You shall strike him with the rod, and deliver his soul from hell." (Proverbs 23:13–14)
Influence, persuasion, and firm leadership from a place of God-ordained authority are good, valid, and soul-saving.
History proves that there has never been a mutiny that didn't have a plausible theoretical justification. There are always arguments, intellectual theories, and grievance narratives invented to defend rebellion. Yet the word "rebellion" has virtually disappeared from our modern vocabulary because people are terrified to use it. Leaders, parents, and pastors hesitate to name rebellion for what it is out of fear of being branded "authoritarian," as if authority itself were an inherently bad thing.
Yes, authority can be abused. But today, under the sway of the wicked one, a massive section of our culture views any and all use of legitimate authority as inherently abusive.
If the objective of spiritual forces is to kill, steal, and destroy, isolating human beings from righteous authority, and ultimately from God, is the ultimate strategy.
Here is how those spiritual mechanisms operate:
* The Strategy of Isolation and Division
God designed us for community, loyalty, and covenant structure. The enemy's oldest tactic, going back to the Garden of Eden, is to introduce suspicion and break relationships. By convincing people that any friction, direction, or discipline from authority makes a leader "toxic," it gives a pseudo-spiritual justification to abandon their post or break their covenant. The end result is mass isolation, lawlessness, and broken families.
The exact same lie is used against God. People label God’s standards, commandments, or supreme authority as "toxic" or "controlling," justifying cutting Him off to "protect their own autonomy."
* Replacing Forgiveness with Self-Righteousness
Christ’s kingdom is built on mercy, grace, and bearing with one another's faults. The poison operating behind modern culture flips this completely. It promises freedom through rebellion and disposal rather than redemption and submission to truth. It convinces the individual that they are pure and everyone else is the problem, shutting down true repentance. It mimics health while delivering hardness of heart.
* The Suicide of the Culture
A society that rejects authority and cannot tolerate imperfection cannot survive. When covenant and structure are replaced by personal convenience, marriages shatter at the first sign of hardship, children discard parents over disagreements, and people abandon truth instead of receiving honest correction.
When spiritual forces target the family unit and God-given authority, they are targeting the primary earthly mirrors of God's order and love. By turning self into the highest authority, it removes the need for grace and the ability to submit to God.
Stand firm, honor God-given authority, guard your heart, and choose covenant over convenience.
