Socialism versus capitalism and why politics are not really just politics:
Socialism versus capitalism and why politics are not really just politics:
Communism and socialism are not compatible with biblical Christianity because they systematically destroy personal ownership, which is the foundational framework for biblical morality, stewardship, and voluntary charity.
To understand why this compatibility fails, we have to look back at the foundational blueprint God established in the scriptures. In Genesis, God calls Abraham, the father of faith, and makes a profound covenant with him. God promises to bless Abraham, to make his name great, and explicitly states the purpose behind it: "You will be a blessing and all peoples on earth will be blessed through you."
This promise of blessing was not just spiritual; it included tangible, physical resources. But notice the divine order: God gives to the individual so that the individual can willingly give to others.
This covenant framework was later extended to the nation of Israel. When God brought them into the Promised Land, He did not establish a system where the state owned everything. Instead, the expectation of private land ownership was permanently woven directly into God's laws.
For instance, the Law of the Kinsman Redeemer and the Jubilee in Leviticus 25 commanded that if an Israelite fell into poverty and had to sell their land, the property was not gone forever. A relative could buy it back, and even if they could not afford to, the land automatically returned to the original family during the Year of Jubilee. The state could never permanently seize it.
Furthermore, the prohibition against moving boundary stones in Deuteronomy 19:14 strictly forbade moving a neighbor's property markers, protecting individual land boundaries from encroachment by others or by corrupt rulers. Even the Tenth Commandment in Exodus 20:17 makes coveting a neighbor’s house or field a sin because that property belongs exclusively to that specific neighbor, not to the collective.
In fact, this biblical standard means that even property tax is not compatible with the word of God. Under a biblical framework, there should be no mechanism that requires an ongoing payment to the government just to retain one’s own property. True ownership means the land is yours permanently, not something you effectively rent from the state under the threat of foreclosure.
The exact same foundational influence can be seen in our legal concepts of financial reset. Modern American bankruptcy laws were heavily inspired by these biblical principles. The concept of discharging debt directly mirrors the "Lord's Release" in Deuteronomy 15, which mandated the complete forgiveness of debts every seven years. Historically, the American legal system honored this by codifying a seven year limit on filing a Chapter 7 bankruptcy. While subsequent updates to the US Bankruptcy Code shifted the modern timeframe to eight years between eligible Chapter 7 discharges, the foundational root remains distinctly biblical.
The degree to which we see injustice and oppression in our society is the direct degree to which we are failing to enforce the system we set up, and the degree to which socialistic principles have been allowed to creep in and corrupt it. The more that concentration of power is permitted, the worse things inevitably get.
This is also why biblical Christianity stands opposed to government welfare systems. True charity must be completely voluntary, driven by personal love and local community, not by state coercion. Furthermore, God establishes a clear relationship between personal responsibility, labor, and survival. In Second Thessalonians 3:10, the scripture explicitly states that if anyone is not willing to work, neither shall he eat. Government welfare programs bypass this moral standard by using tax dollars to force redistribution, which often ends up enabling idleness and replacing genuine, relationship based Christian charity with cold, bureaucratic dependency.
God created people with choice, and He always maintains the agency of the individual. This is why even biblical examples of servitude really had more to do with debt repayment, and were either temporary or entered into permanently by choice. This is not really slavery in the modern sense of human trafficking at all. Even those historical examples of war resulting in some form of apparent servitude were, in reality, cases where a hostile nation tried to destroy or enslave God's people first. When those hostile nations lost, the lives of the women and children were often incorporated into Israelite society. While this was done by force initially, the only other option in the ancient world was the cruel abandonment of those who had no means of survival on their own. Throughout it all, God's laws still preserved human agency, personal accountability, and the path back to independent ownership.
This reality shapes how we must look at economics today. You are not seeing oppression happen because of capitalism itself; you are seeing it because capitalism is not being enforced well enough or fairly enough. In a market society where people compete for the value of goods and services, those who possess or create a product that people are unwilling to live without naturally become the masters of industry. The ability and training to achieve that level of success tends to run in families, which naturally leads to accumulation.
Capitalism and market economies are not perfect, and they are only as good as they are maintained and enforced by the people through an elected government. Even under a capitalist system, human government is imperfect. However, to the degree that the government's purpose and actions actively reduce the concentration of power, it is still working for the benefit of the people.
This is exactly why we have antimonopoly laws in free societies. Their specific purpose is to prevent and punish the over concentration of power so that powerful entities cannot consolidate control just to accumulate more power and oppress people. If capitalism produces situations where people are being oppressed, it is because the government has failed to do its job to enforce these laws.
The primary job of the government should be tightly defined: to protect us from foreign invasion, to punish those who refuse to follow the rules that protect our freedom and agency, and to aggressively prevent the extreme concentration of power. Instead of hand outs that create dependency, the state should focus on providing assistance to those who are actively looking to develop the very goods and services that can successfully compete in a free market economy. Until we reach eternity, a free market economy and capitalism are the best systems we have available.
People should have the ultimate right to choose whether to live fully within society or outside of it, availing themselves of its protections or choosing not to. Humans naturally have vastly different requirements for their personal comfort and individual freedom.
This preservation of individual agency must extend directly into how we communicate and associate. When people are free, you simply do not have the right not to be offended, nor do you have the right to never hear words of disagreement. Any forcible removal of the freedom of thought and communication disrupts the delicate balance of power between people who hold different worldviews and points of view.
To maintain this balance, people should be fully able to freely and safely gather in voluntary communities that promote a set of beliefs and principles that they live by. They should have every right to meet in privately owned spaces and completely prevent incursion by those who only come to disagree and create chaos. However, they do not have the right to reserve public spaces to do the same thing.
All of these principles are fundamentally about maintaining the agency and freedom of all people. The only time that agency and freedom should ever be restricted is when an individual uses their own freedom to actively remove the freedom and agency of others. In doing so, they forfeit their own agency, because they tried to take it away from someone else.
The goal is that for the stretch of this earthly life, we try to establish and maintain the agency and freedom of all people, because this earthly life is uniquely a place of learning and choosing. Life, along with all good things, is provided and maintained by our Creator. He is long suffering, using our earthly life as a crucible to find His treasure, which consists of the people who genuinely trust, choose, and love Him. A godly people know that a God of pure love is the only one who truly knows how to govern them.
The absolute worst possible outcome of a government failing its mandate is when the state itself becomes the monopoly, concentrating all economic, social, political, and communicative power under its own control. This is the core trap of socialism and communism. The idea of the collective is imaginary and representative. In reality, collective power is never held by everyone equally. Real power always ends up being held by the most ruthless individuals, and these state systems simply hand them the perfect framework and tools to exercise that ruthlessness.
Ultimately, these systems are a spiritual deception operating in the heavenly realms. Satan is the prince of the power of the air, and there are demonic principalities and powers assigned to specific cities and regions across the earth. These dark forces want to rule over humanity like slaves, abusing us and stripping away our freedom and individual agency. Their ultimate goal is to keep us from finding the narrow path of escape, which can only be reached through a direct, free, and intentional allegiance to the King of kings and Lord of lords. Socialism and communism are nothing more than the physical frameworks and worldly tools used by these powers to enslave people in the name of government provision and safety.
Satan envies and covets God’s power, whereas God simply possesses all power inherently and has absolutely no need to envy or covet anything. Hell itself was never created for human beings, but was prepared specifically for the third of the angels who rebelled against God and followed after Satan.
Instead, God sets before us the ultimate choice. As He states in Deuteronomy 30:19, "I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing. Choose life." This is His grand story, and He has personally invited us to use our agency to rule with Him. Alternatively, we can choose to believe the father of lies and join him in his eternal torment.
You can happily submit to a God who loves you, wants to adopt you as His own child, teach you to walk in love, and set you up for an eternal paradise with Him. Or, you can choose to believe the lies of God’s enemy, who falsely accuses Him of being unjust and controlling, using the very chaos that his own demonic lies have created in the world and in your life as false proof.
Proponents of socialism will often try to point to the Nordic countries like Sweden, Denmark, or Norway as working examples of a successful socialist society. However, this is a massive historical and economic deception. These nations are not socialist. Their leaders have explicitly clarified that they are market economies, not planned socialist states. Economically, they are thoroughly capitalist societies that protect private property rights, rely on free enterprise, and have some of the highest ratings for business freedom in the world. What they actually practice is welfare capitalism, using the massive wealth generated by free market capitalism to fund public services through high income taxes.
The state does not own the means of production there. Where true socialism and communism have actually been implemented, meaning the abolition of private property and state ownership of industries, the result has always been economic devastation, poverty, and totalitarian control, as seen in Venezuela, Cuba, and the Soviet Union.
Beyond property rights, these systems fail on a level of human nature. No matter how good the stated intentions may sound on paper, their true goal and consequence is always the extreme concentration of power into the hands of the state. When fully implemented, they strip property, agency, and power from individuals, concentrating it solely among those who have the ruthlessness to maintain it. Under sinful human leadership, this concentration of power is a recipe for disaster. Men are sinful, and if they use their agency, power, and freedom to hurt others, and the strong and ruthless overwhelm the weak and helpless, then concentrating all power in one place only makes it worse.
What is truly perfect? It is Christ reigning as King of Kings, with all knowledge, power, and authority. He is the only exception to the rule of corrupted power. Christ will return as King, establishing a divine monarchy or more accurately, a perfect theocracy. In His case, the extreme concentration of power works perfectly because Christ is completely humble, sinless, and flawless. Through His connection to the Holy Spirit, He sees all and knows all, rendering absolute justice without a hint of corruption. This is the only concentration of power in human history that will ever function righteously, and eventually, it will be physically enforced upon the earth.
In the meantime, we live in a world where we must choose how to use our agency. If someone is a slave to sin, that state is ultimately voluntary. It is through genuine knowledge and divine wisdom that true freedom is attained. Knowing the truth makes us free, allowing us to willingly use our agency and freedom in obedience to our perfect King and older brother.
Yet even under the perfect government of Christ, the Bible makes it clear that He will not establish a communist or socialist collective. Scripture’s descriptions of the Millennial Reign and the world to come explicitly retain personal property and individual reward. The prophets declare that under His righteous rule, "Every man will sit under his own vine and under his own fig tree, and no one will make them afraid" in Micah 4:4. The Bible guarantees that people will build houses and inhabit them, plant vineyards and eat their fruit in Isaiah 65:21 and 22. Individuals will have their own land, and He will personally ensure that every person benefits fairly from the fruit of their own labor.
The entire biblical narrative relies on this cycle: Divine Blessing leads to Personal Ownership which leads to Voluntary Generosity.
Communism and socialism break this cycle by inserting the government into the center of the equation. By systematically eliminating or heavily restricting private ownership, these systems strip the individual of the very resources God provided for them to fulfill their calling. You cannot use your blessings to be a blessing to others if the state has already confiscated those blessings by force. True Christian charity requires a heart transformed by grace, choosing to give out of love, not a population controlled by a mandate, forced to give out of coercion.
