Solomon clung to his wives in love, but they…
Solomon clung to his wives in love, but they captured his heart and took the place of God. Scripture tells us plainly that “his wives turned away his heart after other gods” and “his heart was not perfect with the Lord his God” (1 Kings 11.4). What happened to Solomon did not begin with idolatry. It began with misplaced affection. When we allow any love even a good love to rise above our loyalty to God, that good love becomes a destructive one.
Some parents fall into the same trap today. In the name of love, they cling to their children with permissiveness and unbiblical acceptance, allowing natural affection to outweigh biblical truth. In doing so, they reject not only wise correction, but even God’s law and the Gospel itself. Paul warned us that in the last days people would gather teachers who would “tell them what their itching ears want to hear” (2 Timothy 4.3). When our hearts are drawn away from obedience, destruction always follows.
This is why Proverbs commands, “Guard your heart above all else, for it determines the course of your life” (Proverbs 4.23). Your heart is the battlefield. Whoever captures the heart governs the life. And God calls us to give Him the throne of our affections without rival.
Jesus Himself anchored every command and every spiritual duty to the greatest commandment: “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, all your mind, and all your strength” (Matthew 22.37). Not part. Not some. All. This is why Jesus also said that unless our devotion to Him surpasses even father and mother, we cannot be His disciples. Not because He calls us to despise our families, but because divided loyalty destroys both our faith and our ability to love others rightly.
Even in marriage we promise to “forsake all others.” That covenant is only a shadow of something far higher and holier. When we belong to God, we forsake all rivals of the heart. We love others best only when we love God first. Never let a spouse, a child, a friend, or a cultural voice pull you away from giving your heart wholly to God.
Let your prayer be: “God, renew a right spirit within me” (Psalm 51.10). For only God is good. Only God is faithful. Only God can hold your heart steady. And only God can empower you to walk in truth, stand in love, and finish your race with your heart wholly His.
