If you’ve ever watched the 1962 classic comedy Mr. Hobbs Takes a Vacation, you know the hilarious, mounting frustration of Jimmy Stewart trying to survive a disastrous family beach rental. The house is a complete wreck, anchored by that monstrous, temperamental water pump inside a tiny wooden shack outside that he has to wrestle with just to get a basic drop of water running.
But the peak of his frustration happens right in the front room. Jimmy Stewart turns on a light bulb, stares at how incredibly dim, weak, and pathetic it is, and delivers that brilliant piece of classic sarcasm: “That’s not a light... that’s a dark.”
It’s a funny vintage movie moment, but it perfectly captures the spiritual climate of the world we are living in today.
Every single day, modern culture points at things that are spiritually dim, hollow, and broken, trying to pass them off as "enlightenment." They want us to believe they’ve found a better way to live. But when you look closely through the lens of God's truth, you realize the reality: They aren't offering us light. They are offering us a dark.
Just like that broken-down rental house, the world is operating on a completely faulty system. Let’s stop playing games with the culture and expose these dark, counterfeit "lights" for exactly what they are:
* Radical Secularism: It promises total liberation from God, but only delivers hopelessness, historic levels of anxiety, and a generation without an anchor. That’s not a light.
* The New Morality: It promises "freedom" and "self-expression," but leaves behind a trail of broken families, identity confusion, and deep wounds. That’s not a light.
* Hyper-Materialism: It promises fulfillment through what you own, but it only breeds empty comparison and endless discontent. That’s not a light.
* The Religion of Self-Worship: It teaches us that we are the centers of the universe and that truth is whatever we want it to be, leading to absolute chaos. That’s not a light.
When the world tries to parade these evil ideologies as the new path forward, we don't have to be intimidated. The darkness only feels overwhelming if you’ve forgotten how powerful the true Light is. We don't have to rely on the world's broken, sputtering pump shack to sustain us.
We serve the Keeper of the real Light, and His truth stands firm. The scripture reminds us exactly how this story ends:
> "The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it." — John 1:5
