There is a genuineness of heart that accompanies true salvation. Salvation is not merely a confession of words, but a surrender to the Lordship of Jesus Christ.

If we reject the Lordship of Jesus in practice, that rejection calls our profession into question. We can reject Him in word, but we can also reject Him in deed by continuing down a path we know is disobedient.

Scripture says:

“Whoever abides in Him does not sin. Whoever sins has neither seen Him nor known Him.”
1 John 3:6 (NKJV)

That does not mean a believer never stumbles. It means a believer cannot settle comfortably into sin. Persistent, willful continuation in known disobedience becomes unbearable to someone truly born of God.

Why?

“For whom He foreknew, He also predestined to be conformed to the image of His Son.”
Romans 8:29 (NKJV)

Sanctification is not optional. It is the inevitable work of God in those who belong to Him.

Can a believer rebel for a season? Yes. Scripture makes that clear. A believer may resist truth through fear, pride, or ignorance for a time. But if we truly belong to Christ, we will not remain there indefinitely. If we believe in the Living Word, we will ultimately submit to the written Word, because we accept it as true.

To reject the clear words of Jesus, either verbally or through continued practice, is to reject Him. For:

“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.”
John 1:1 (NKJV)

Rebellion is not a light matter.

“For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, and stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry.”
1 Samuel 15:23 (NKJV)

There are vices and strongholds that may cling for a time. We may dig in our heels. But eventually sin becomes too heavy to carry alongside a true profession of faith. At some point, we must either release our sin or release our claim of allegiance to Christ.

“No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or else he will be loyal to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon.”
Matthew 6:24 (NKJV)

“Therefore, to him who knows to do good and does not do it, to him it is sin.”
James 4:17 (NKJV)

Now consider marriage.

Jesus said:

“What God has joined together, let not man separate.”
Matthew 19:6 (NKJV)

When asked about divorce, He acknowledged only a narrow ground:

“Whoever divorces his wife, except for sexual immorality, and marries another, commits adultery.”
Matthew 19:9 (NKJV)

Paul wrote:

“A wife is not to depart from her husband. But even if she does depart, let her remain unmarried or be reconciled to her husband.”
1 Corinthians 7:10–11 (NKJV)

Separation is not presented as peace. It is presented as a condition that must move toward reconciliation. Peace is not distance. Peace is restored fellowship.

God says:

“For the Lord God of Israel says that He hates divorce, for it covers one’s garment with violence.”
Malachi 2:16 (NKJV)

The violence in that passage is covenant treachery. Divorce is not merely paperwork. It is betrayal of what God joined together.

It is possible to say “I have not divorced” while functionally living in separation that contradicts covenant faithfulness. Paper does not define obedience. Direction does.

Jesus told a parable of two sons. One said no but later obeyed. The other said yes but did not obey. The one who obeyed did the will of the father. Profession without obedience is more dangerous than initial resistance followed by repentance.

Now consider the warning passages:

“Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived…”
1 Corinthians 6:9 (NKJV)

This does not mean anyone who has ever sinned is without hope, because Jesus also said that all sins will be forgiven men except…

So how are these truths reconciled?

We are not defined by what we once did. We are defined by what we continue to defend, justify, and refuse to surrender.

“Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in heaven.”
Matthew 7:21 (NKJV)

Profession without obedience is self-deception.

“Examine yourselves as to whether you are in the faith. Test yourselves.”
2 Corinthians 13:5 (NKJV)

“For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine… because they have itching ears…”
2 Timothy 4:3 (NKJV)

Light and darkness do not coexist peacefully.

“And what communion has light with darkness?”
2 Corinthians 6:14 (NKJV)

This is not about paperwork. It is about posture.

It is not about appearances. It is about allegiance.

The question is not what we claim.

The question is what road we are choosing.

And that is something each of us must answer honestly before God.
